In a familiar environment, OTSS uses fun and interactive methods to teach basic bicycle and pedestrian safety.
Program Description
“On the Safe Side" is a safety awareness program funded through a grant from the Stanislaus County Children and Families Commission. On The Safe Side is designed specifically to address bicycle and pedestrian safety for preschool through first grade youth in Stanislaus County. With the help of “PC” the Robotics Car, youth learn six steps of bicycle safety in a classroom setting. Safe Moves City, a safety simulation course, is used at community events as an alternative for youth to learn about bicycle and pedestrian safety in a fun, interactive setting. Helmets are also available and individually fitted for children who have participated in the safety presentations. Center for Human Services believes early education and awareness can change these statistics and prevent serious injury or death.
According to the California Department of Health Services, between 2004 and 2006 10 children in Stanislaus County died due to injuries sustained in bicycle or pedestrian accidents involving motor vehicles. 97 additional children were hospitalized with non fatal injuries.
