In a familiar environment, OTSS uses fun and interactive methods to teach basic bicycle and pedestrian safety.
Program Description
“On the Safe Side" is a safety awareness program funded through a grant from the Stanislaus County Children and Families Commission. On The Safe Side is designed specifically to address bicycle and pedestrian safety for preschool through first grade youth in Stanislaus County. With the help of “PC” the Robotics Car, youth learn six steps of bicycle safety in a classroom setting. Safe Moves City, a safety simulation course, is used at community events as an alternative for youth to learn about bicycle and pedestrian safety in a fun, interactive setting. Helmets are also available and individually fitted for children who have participated in the safety presentations. In 2004, eleven children ages 5 through 12 were hospitalized for bicycle injuries in Stanislaus County according to the California Department of Health Services. Center for Human Services believes early education and awareness can change these statistics and prevent serious injury or death.
