Youth from Hutton House’s Community Youth Connection Accept Proclamation from Modesto City Council

Center for Human Services’ (CHS) Hutton House and their youth leadership group, Community Youth Connection (CYC), joined the Modesto City Council on Tuesday November 1, 2011 as they proclaimed the month of November,

Runaway Prevention and Awareness Month in the City of Modesto.  Speakers, Jesse and Cory addressed the City Council, “We just want you to know the Hutton House is a safe place for kids to go.  Thank you for supporting us and Center for Human Services’ Hutton House.”  In 2002, the National Runaway Switchboard declared November National Runaway Prevention Month as part of their effort to educate and prevent youth in crisis ending up on the streets.  In 2009, the State of California followed suit.  Tuesday, Modesto joined the nation and state in recognizing the need for increased awareness and action regarding runawaysand youth in crisis.

CHS offers a unique service through Hutton House, our youth crisis shelter for teens ages 13 – 17. Hutton House opened its doors in 1976 as a six bed, temporary shelter and counseling provider for runaways and youth in crisis.  It is the only one of its kind in the region. Currently, Hutton House is an eight bed shelter and has served thousands of runaway, homeless and other youth in crisis in our community. In addition to putting a roof over their heads and food on the table, some of the services available to youth and their families include: counseling, alcohol and drug assessments, parent education and referral services. This past year Hutton House provided assistance to nearly 326 young people from our community.  95% of them returned home or went to an alternative and appropriate living arrangement.  One parent reported, “My daughter and I have a better relationship, and I see the changes she made”.

CHS is in the business of changing lives, building futures and helping families.
