After a hospital visit, Walt Thorne, a 74-year-old Oakdale resident, returned home alone, unable to walk or sit up on his own. A leg amputation and severe infection caused by diabetes left him in a vulnerable state, and his health began to decline.
Walt initiated contact with Adult Protective Services and the Social Services Welfare Department as a suggestion from his healthcare provider. After a referral, Gladys Porter, Adult Program Specialist for the Strengthening Seniors Program, got in touch with Walt to provide help. One of his main barriers was his preexisting health condition, diabetes. Living on a fixed income, he also struggled to stay up-to-date with rent and utilities. The Strengthening Seniors Program was able to get Walt food, and necessities and connect him with Medi-Cal and Cal Fresh benefits. In addition, he received assistance to pay a few months of rent he owed.
Walt and Gladys had been working hand in hand to improve his living situation and health. After not hearing from him for a few days, Gladys was concerned and decided to pay Walt a home visit. Aware of Walt’s ongoing battle with diabetes, Gladys feared he needed urgent medical attention. She alerted the local authorities who took Walt to the hospital for the care he needed, and he was then transferred to a nursing and rehabilitation center.
Walt’s encounters with Gladys left a lasting impression. Her genuine concern and proactive approach made all the difference in his life. Before Gladys, Walt faced barriers he was not able to overcome alone. Gladys became a fierce advocate and provided him with what he describes as “lifesaving aid”. Walt’s advice to others is to reach out to services like the Strengthening Seniors program that help people like him. He shares his story to shed light on the program he considers to have saved his life and on Gladys, who went above and beyond for him.
Walt has made a nearly full recovery and is now living at a nursing and rehabilitation center, where he has access to physical therapy and round-the-clock care. Walt is helping engage other seniors through art classes and gardening. He wants to inspire and help others in their recovery journey through art therapy. He believes the Strengthening Seniors Program is, “not just important, it’s vital. There are so many people that need help, that don’t get it and having a local resource like this is imperative.” He plans to continue a productive life with little assistance, but he knows Gladys and the Strengthening Seniors Program are there if he needs them.
